Grand Opening's Beginning

The story begins with childhood best friends David Henriksen and Stuart Ake. When David did a social media search in his 50’s to try to find his old best friend, they reconnected and quickly realized a mutual passion for premium wine. Stuart had been in Napa after graduating from Berkeley, and worked with aspiring winemakers to create premium labels.

Meanwhile - Tom Annexstad and the Annexstad Family Foundation were putting underprivileged kids through colleges all across the country. Tom’s son, Blake, and David’s daughter, Caroline, met at the University of Georgia School of Law where Caroline served at the Wilbanks Child Endangerment and Sexual Exploitation (“CEASE”) Clinic. Tom’s friend, Marlan Wilbanks, funded the opening of the CEASE Clinic. Tom and David also soon realized their mutual love for great wine, and the idea of Grand Opening Wine was born. David was able to launch a new wine with both his oldest and his newest friends - relationships spanning 50 years.

Thank you for experiencing our wine, and may it be an intimate part of your life defined by grand experiences, community, and purpose.

Established through a generous donation by Georgia Law alumnus, and good friend, Marlan Wilbanks, CEASE is the nation’s first legal clinic dedicated to representing survivors of child sexual abuse. CEASE opened its doors in January 2016 as a part of the University of Georgia School of Law, providing second and third-year law students with the opportunity to gain experience in the practice of law while serving a crucial need in the community.

The impetus for the clinic, a new Georgia law, House Bill 17, known as the Hidden Predator Act, went into effect July 1, 2015 and extends the statute of limitations allowing survivors of child sexual abuse to file civil suits against perpetrators.
